Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... For Now.

The creative mastermind never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Overwhelming Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. He is striving to ignore the noise.

“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by audience chatter.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Does the showrunner Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff are not listening by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… sort of.

“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to discard a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, why not reference the classics?

“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
