Three Lions Coach Reveals His Approach: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

In the past, Anthony Barry was playing for Accrington Stanley. Today, his attention is fixed supporting the head coach secure World Cup glory next summer. The road from player to coach began with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. He remembers, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He realized his purpose.

Staggering Ascent

Barry's progression stands out. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a name for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His club career took him to elite sides, plus he took on international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with big names such as top footballers. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the top in his words.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. We must create a structured plan that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Passion, especially with the smallest details, defines Barry’s story. Working every hour day and night, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their methods involve psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the England collective and avoids language such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a rest,” Barry says. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”

Ambitious Trainers

Barry describes himself along with the manager as extremely driven. “We aim to control each element of play,” he states. “We want to conquer the whole ground and that's our focus most of our time to. We must to not only anticipate of the trends but to surpass them and set new standards. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“There are 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We need to execute a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and explain it thoroughly in that period. It’s to take it from thought to data to understanding to action.

“To build a methodology enabling productivity in that window, we have to use all the time available after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds with them. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. The team has secured their place at the finals after six consecutive victories and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach must reflect all the positives about the Premier League,” he comments. “The physicality, the versatility, the strength, the integrity. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.

“For it to feel easy, we need to provide a system that lets them to play freely as they do in club games, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts available to trainers in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, pressing from the front. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, especially in England's top flight. All teams are well-prepared these days. They can organize – defensive shapes. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”

Thirst for Improvement

Barry’s hunger for development is all-consuming. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, especially as his class featured big names such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. For self-improvement, he entered the most challenging environments he could find to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.

Barry graduated with top honors, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – got into print. Lampard included won over and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the club got rid of nearly all assistants while keeping Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, and, four months later, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he recruited Barry of Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
