During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, promising “a different age” and an bold start to his term.

A Historic Figure

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting advice to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
