In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.
The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She told the moments before the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
