Russian President Vladimir Putin Vows Uninterrupted Energy Shipments to India in Defiance of US Pressure

Amid a unambiguous statement to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “unbroken” deliveries of crude oil to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in Delhi and declared their relationship were “resistant to outside influence.”

A Message For the United States

Putin's comments, delivered Friday, seemed to be a pointed rebuke at western countries, that have sought to urge New Delhi into reducing its longstanding links with Moscow. The backdrop is in response to previous American measures, including additional tariffs targeting New Delhi over its buying of Russian oil.

“Our nation is a trustworthy source of fuel and everything required for the development of India’s industry,” he stated. “We are ready to continue securing the consistent delivery of resources for the booming Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, without naming energy explicitly, reinforced the focus by stating that “energy security has been a robust and important pillar of the India-Russia alliance.”

Challenging US Interference

In the lead-up to the talks, in a television interview, Putin had criticized US interference over India's energy purchases. The president questioned, “If the US has the right to buy our atomic materials, then why can't India have the identical right?”

Putin's arrival marked his maiden trip to India since the onset of the war in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi engaged in a deliberate attempt to demonstrate that the friendship between the two leaders was undisturbed.

A Warm Greeting

Taking an notable gesture, the Indian PM welcomed directly Putin upon his arrival. The two embraced warmly as close allies before having a private dinner the night before the summit.

He later described India's alliance with Russia as “a guiding star” and added it was “built on mutual respect and strong faith.”

Reaffirming Bilateral Partnerships

The meeting resulted in several significant pacts regarding military and financial collaboration. One significant result was the signing of an strategic roadmap extending until 2030, which sets a goal to boost commerce to one hundred billion dollars each year by the 2030 deadline.

The leaders also pledged to restructure their defence ties. Even as Russia remains India's biggest source of weapons, its share has diminished in recent years as India works to diversify its supply base.

The joint statement stressed an agreement on the co-development of cutting-edge defence platforms, though explicit mention of purchases such as the Su-57 fighter jet were omitted.

Overall, both nations affirmed that during the “present intricate, tense, and volatile international environment, Russian-Indian ties continue to be strong to outside forces.”
