In a recent appearance, actor Jude Law remarked he had no concerns about backlash for portraying Vladimir Putin in a new film. This production, however, may align so closely with the mythologized image circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it functions as a endorsement rather than a critique.

The Crafted Strongman

For years, the Russian political apparatus and its entertainment industry have collaborated to craft a tailor-made version of the president. This figure is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a local 007 who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a TV series launched last fall, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a fictional security officer selected by fate to “save” the nation from disorder. While the character's name Mikhail, the message is unmistakable: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals frequently result in buttressing this identical story instead of undercutting it. A new film based on a bestselling satirical novel sets out to subvert the leader's mythology by framing him as a symptom but as a consequence, shifting the focus to the spin doctors around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, the president is presented as having been picked by influential figures to stabilise the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and all but beg him to become president. He replies is that he would prefer to rule from the shadows, desiring permanent power.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. In reality, none of this took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one actually pleaded with Putin to take the job. The position was effectively a casting call with many candidates. Central to this process stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who planned to control the state de facto.

• The shortlist featured several politicians, including a reformer subsequently assassinated and a former spy chief.
• According to an expert who studied Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate merely met the necessary criteria: obedient, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A property developer close to the events stated the primary requirement was manageability and faithfulness, not strength.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the image of Putin as a master operative was constructed retrospectively. Stories about his clandestine activities in East Germany fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and technical tasks, a mid-level functionary not involved with field operations.

Curiously, the move to depicting him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s arrival as James Bond. The grittier interpretation prompted Russian media and social media to make comparisons with Putin. Mashup posters replacing the actor's likeness with his appeared on city centers, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the authorities will not miss the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its exclusion of mass protests, the political rivals, or prominent activists in the story, despite covering recent years, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is often an omnipotent figure who remains unseen on screen. His influence is signaled through portraits or calls “from above”. Now, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently echo the exact legends it perhaps aims to examine.
