Los Angeles Faces Record-Breaking Heat Just One Week After Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring significant rainfall that led to inundation across parts of the city, the City of Angels is now grappling with abnormally high conditions for this time of year.
Record-Setting Readings
By Friday afternoon, the thermometer climbed to 91°F (33°C) in central LA, according to weather officials. This easily surpasses the previous daily record for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was established in the previous year.
"Very warm conditions" were labeled on NWS maps for the region.
Public Health Advisories
Authorities issued a warning that Friday's weather posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for those at risk. Their advice suggested:
- Staying hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Not leaving anyone unattended in a car.
An Extreme Reversal
This sudden spike in temperature comes on the heels of a powerful winter storm that pummeled the area last week. That system unleashed thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to mountainous regions, leading to mudslide risks for millions residents.
Tragically, the storm also caused a massive avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
The outlook suggests some relief is coming. The heat were forecast to fall to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by Friday night.
Additional areas that experienced 90°F included Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were forecast to experience the upper eighties.
For the weekend, downtown Los Angeles can expect weather in the 80s, with a further cooldown expected for the week ahead.
