Far-Right Former Legislator José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile New Leader.

In a decisive runoff election, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.

A Clear-Cut Triumph

After more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.

This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Campaign Built On Security and Migration

Recognized for his staunch Catholic views and regard for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely built on promises to address rising insecurity and drastically restrict migration.

He repeatedly blamed foreigners, notably the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the race, he issued an ultimatum for them to depart before the new term begins or face expulsion.

His proposals envisioned controversial measures such as building detention centers, barriers, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the military presence on the northern border.

Part of a Broader Trend

Numerous observers interpret Kast's success as fitting into a broader conservative wave in Latin America, following this year's electoral results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other analysts further frame it as a extension of the predictable alternation of power between left and right governments since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.

Governing Without a Clear Majority

In spite of his sweeping electoral triumph, Kast does not command an clear majority in Congress, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even when all right-leaning parties are counted together.

This legislative landscape may hinder his agenda, including a vow to cut public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to offered a clear explanation.

"There are many aspects about how a Kast administration will operate that remain unclear because he has not said his methods for implement them," commented a political science professor.

The analyst added, "Regarding the economy, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies common for the right. But the area with far less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his central theme across the race."
