Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder States Unilever Blocked Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
One of the original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, who co-founded the business alongside his partner, announced how he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor within a personal collection highlighting causes the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Between Creators versus Parent Company
The recent announcement escalates the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized dessert company with Unilever, the British packaged goods corporation which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders maintain how the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor as a Symbol of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen stated through social media how he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for support for Palestinians due to its colors, which match the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line is being created through Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which originally created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions
The founder indicated how he will develop additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, after many years of involvement, citing concerns that the company's autonomy was compromised following Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
