A trader profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the event.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the month's conclusion surged in the period preceding Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A particular user, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436K from a initial bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Platform data shows that users put the odds of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had jumped to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.

Several of other individuals also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Political Attention Grows

Politicians are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week would prevent government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the United States, with users able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting arena.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
